Day-by-Day Itinerary
Start at the escalator's lower terminus
Exit Central MTR Station at Exit D2 and walk to Cochrane Street, where the escalator begins. The system runs downhill from 6-10 AM (for commuters descending to work) and uphill from 10:20 AM-midnight. Time your visit after 10:20 AM to ride upward.
Hop on and off at different levels
The escalator passes through 14 streets. Exit at Staunton Street for SoHo's brunch cafes (try Australian Coffee or Classified). Continue to Elgin Street for vintage boutiques. The escalator moves at 0.65 meters per second—slow enough to observe street life.
Browse art galleries and antique shops
Exit at Hollywood Road, Hong Kong's antique hub since the 1840s. Explore Cat Street Bazaar for vintage Mao memorabilia, jade carvings, and retro Hong Kong posters. Gallery hopping is free; serious collectors can find Ming Dynasty ceramics at high-end dealers.
Experience Hong Kong's oldest Taoist temple
Walk 5 minutes to Man Mo Temple (built 1847), dedicated to the gods of literature and war. The interior is filled with massive spiral incense coils that burn for weeks. Free admission; donations appreciated. The temple offers a serene contrast to the surrounding urban chaos.
Descend via Graham Street Market or PMQ
Walk down Graham Street Market (wet market with fresh produce and live seafood) or visit PMQ (former Police Married Quarters turned creative hub with local designer shops). End with lunch at a dai pai dong or trendy fusion restaurant in SoHo.

What Our Questions Say
Traveler Reviews
This escalator is a brilliant example of Hong Kong's creative solutions to extreme topography. We hopped off at every level and discovered amazing cafes, antique shops, and Man Mo Temple. The escalator itself is free, but we easily spent $50 on brunch and cocktails in SoHo. A must-do for urban explorers.
Fascinating experience, though it's more about the journey than the destination. We loved the SoHo neighborhood—so many trendy restaurants and bars. Hollywood Road's antique shops were hit-or-miss (lots of overpriced tourist traps). Man Mo Temple was beautiful and peaceful. Recommend visiting on a weekday to avoid crowds.
As a "Chungking Express" fan, riding this escalator was surreal. The views of narrow alleyways and old tenement buildings are quintessentially Hong Kong. We spent 3 hours exploring every level and found hidden gems like Tai Cheong Bakery (egg tarts!) and a speakeasy bar on Staunton Street. Don't rush—savor the layers.
