Tour Overview

Go beyond observation: clean enclosures, prepare panda meals, and learn from professional keepers at the Dujiangyan Panda Base, China's premier conservation research facility.

Detailed Itinerary

7:30 AM

Hotel Pickup & Transfer to Dujiangyan

Private pickup from your Chengdu hotel for a 1.5-hour scenic drive to Dujiangyan Panda Base, located at the foot of Qingcheng Mountain. Your guide will explain the day's activities and safety protocols.

9:00 AM

Volunteer Orientation & Uniform Distribution

Arrive at the base and receive your volunteer uniform (green vest and gloves). Attend a 30-minute briefing by professional keepers covering panda biology, conservation challenges, and the base's role in the national panda protection network.

9:30 AM

Enclosure Cleaning & Bamboo Preparation

Roll up your sleeves! Clean panda enclosures by removing old bamboo, sweeping floors, and refreshing water bowls. Then, help prepare fresh bamboo stalks—pandas consume 12-38 kg daily! Learn to identify the bamboo species pandas prefer and how to arrange them for optimal feeding.

11:00 AM

Panda Bread (Wowotou) Making Workshop

In the base's kitchen, learn to make 'wowotou'—steamed cornmeal buns enriched with vitamins and minerals. These supplement pandas' bamboo diet. Shape the dough into traditional cone shapes and watch as pandas eagerly devour your creations during afternoon feeding.

12:00 PM

Lunch & Q&A with Keepers

Enjoy a simple lunch at the base cafeteria while chatting with keepers about their daily routines, memorable panda personalities, and the emotional challenges of preparing pandas for wild release.

1:30 PM

Panda Observation & Feeding Time

Watch from a privileged vantage point as keepers feed the pandas the bamboo and wowotou you prepared. Observe their eating habits, social interactions, and individual personalities. Your guide will identify each panda by name and share their backstories.

3:00 PM

Certificate Ceremony & Photo Session

Receive your official volunteer certificate from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. Take commemorative photos with panda statues and browse the gift shop for exclusive volunteer merchandise.

4:00 PM

Return to Chengdu Hotel

Depart Dujiangyan and arrive back at your Chengdu hotel around 5:30 PM, with memories and a certificate to treasure.

The highlight of our China trip!

This was so much more meaningful than just watching pandas at a zoo. My 10-year-old daughter loved making the panda bread, and we both felt like we contributed to real conservation work. The keepers were passionate and generous with their knowledge. The certificate is now framed in her bedroom!

Authentic and educational experience

Unlike touristy 'panda photo' gimmicks, this program is the real deal. You do actual work that helps the pandas, and the educational component is top-notch. The base is smaller and quieter than the main Chengdu facility, which made the experience feel more intimate. Highly recommend for anyone who cares about wildlife conservation.
